Mable is not a woman at all

I am afraid to say that the woman we have all come to know to be Mable, is in fact not a woman at all. Now I know you are all surprised as I am at this, dare I say it, disaster of a wedding, but I simply cannot have this now unmasked trickster marry my son. No doubt, you will all have your own opinions as to what has happened here tonight, and I trust that my good friend Edward Lock, who is waiting by my beautifully ornate door, which incidentally is of royal mahogany, will hand to you your belongings, that you may leave what has been a folly of a funeral behind, and return, in good spirits, to your warm home having had a free complementary bottle of our vintage champagne.

Makes sense?

Strange in what way?

Does it reveal a lot about the kind of personality behind the words?

The style is old fashioned, but that might be appropriate if the story is set in an earlier time and the writer wishes to create a suitable atmosphere. What is strange is the content. For example, it seems odd to me that a person who was sending home his guests after the cancelled wedding of his son to a woman who is not a woman would take the time to discuss the front door, or describe the event

It was intended to convey the attitude of bigoted Englishman who is trying to be part of a social class higher than his. Ultimately, he is sucking up to the upper class, and his style is very forced, as he is trying to be someone he is not. It is also intended to to be humorous too.

Perhaps one needs to read the whole thing to really appreciate it.

By the way, Anon, I did tell you about six weeks ago that we normally spell the name 'Mabel'.
