I'm French and I was in the USA some years ago, and I was wondering why Americans say "ma'am"
instead of "madame" with "d" pronounced. Why do they ignore the "d"? Is that just laziness or it is more correct to say it without the "d"? Thank you for that. Stéphane

It is more colloquial to omit the /d/. Adding the /d/ sounds pretentious.
