Speech & Pronunciation

M --> N

I find it really difficult to pronounce M and then go directly to F, as in emphasize, emphasis or comfortable.

Would it be ok if I just pronounce M as N for those words?

Overcoming obstacles like this is part of learning english. So if i were you, i'd do my best to be able to pronounce words with "mf" and not resort to "nf", which i think, would be kind of obvious. Good luck!

We actually don't pronounce a pure /m/ there, nor a pure /n/.
We use a sound that might be described as something between /m/ and /n/.
There's even an IPA symbol for it - an m with a little tail off the lower right.
I can't find the symbol anywhere, but it's like this / (missing image) /, but an /m/ with a tail instead of an /n/ with a tail.

If that's the sound that's

An m with a little tail off the lower right? What sound would it be? I have no idea how to pronounce it. The symbol you presented is pronounced as /ng/. Do I close my

I was commenting on the similarity of the shapes of the symbols - not on the similarity of the sounds. The sound of "m-tail" is completely different from the sound of "n-tail" (ng). Do not attempt to pronounce "m" before "f" or "ph" as an "ng" sound!
Try your best to say the /m/. If you miss, and it comes out something like /n/, then you are probably saying the "m-tail" sound. Wha

You could also say "empfasis" if that helps. That is, insert a /p/ between the /m/ and the /f/.
