"ly" in adverb

Do I write, "That school operates independently of other school districts" or "That school operates independent of other school districts"?
I think I need an "ly" because it's an adverb, but it sounds odd.

"That school operates independently of other school districts" This is correct.

Independent of - is more adjectival than adverbial in my opinion.

John's company is independent of his parents'. - This means John's company is self-sustained without any financial ties and support from his parents' company.
