I am curious. Is it me or this sentence indeed has a strange sound to it?

Does it mean "I ate a big lunch?" which is my first intiution. Or, it carries a connotation; such as " before I started my diet plan, I usually ate a lot at lunch?".

Almost any sentence can sound strange if you keep going over it in your mind again and again!
