When referring to a quantity of money, the better choice is as much as.

The same thing is true for cases in which you have a number followed by a plural noun when the reference is to a quantity/amount of weight, distance or time:

- With this diet, people have lost as much as 25 pounds in the first two weeks.
- My new car gets as much as 50 miles p

It would be more typical to ask "How long does your commute to work take?" (i.e. People don't normally ask how many hours a commute to work takes.)

The real question here is count and non-count nouns - there's a lot of info on the internet if you google the topic.

As for the examples given, dollars is "as much as" because it's really talking about money, and money is a non-count noun: "How much money do you have?" "How much does this cost?"

Time is non-count, but hours are a count noun. "How much time...." ("How long..." i
