' low lwvel BASKET-HOUSES '

Hello friends, I would like to know what is (or were)a basket-house:
' ... the rest of the places on the street were nameless and miserable, low level BASKET-HOUSES or small coffeehouses where the performer passed the hat'
all this happened in New York about 1960.

Thanks in advance, Jo

I think a basket house is kind of a music coffee shop where music performers are paid from the contents of a basket that the owner passes around from table to table. paco

Hi !

That's right - they were the small establishments where folk singers and average people etc would gather to sing. this is where bob dylan started his singing life - you can learn more about it on his biography dvd. People would indeed pass a basket around the room to put donations in to pay the performers - hence the name Basket Houses.
