Lot better or a lot better?

When you are saying that one is better than the other in comparison, would you say: "This is lot better." or "This is a lot better."?
How about: "This is much better." Is this also ok to use?

"This is much better" is fine. "This is a lot better" is also correct, but it is more informal. It's fine in conversation, but in any formal writing I would use "much better."
