lost their life

Hello. I came across a sentence as follows.

"This book is dedicated to the men that lost their life fighting for the democracy."

Is it OK to use "their life" in this sentence? I thought it should be "lives."

Not in your example, but it's correct in sentences like this: The life of sailors is hard. (= the kind of life sailors lead, the circumstances in which they live)
