lost out on the house

They lost out on the house.

Does it mean 'they did not succeed in purchasing the house'?

Is 'lose out on sth.' a common usage?

Thanks,

My Harrap's dictionary says:

lose out on something (colloq) = to fail to benefit from it.

So 'they lost out on the house' would mean they could not buy it or rent it for their vacation... I suppose.

Also there is more or less the same expression with 'to miss' as in 'they missed out on all the good things' meaning they failed to enjoy the goo
