Losing money

Toyota is still losing money on the Prius because of the cost -- close to $5000 -- of the battery.

What exactly does 'losing money' mean?

I don't think selling the Prius leads to debt.

Thanks

Given only the context, the cost of each Prius evidently exceeds the income it brings in; presumably Toyota makes enough on its other more traditionally-fuelled cars to offset this loss and allow them to continue to experiment with hybrid vehicles.
