Losing hair severely

I have made up the examples below.

(1a) Tom doesn't know why he's losing his hair severely.

My non-native English speaking friends think it's wrong. They revise it, as shown below.

(1b) Tom doesn't know why he has severe hair loss.

Why is my (1a) wrong? Thank you very much.
