Lose weight: Losing 10 kilograms has been shown to decrease blood pressure by five to 20 points.

Hi,

The above is from an article titled "The Silent Killer." I wonder why it uses the passive voice "has been shown" rather than the actice voice "has shown." Can you explain why? Thanks.

In technical writing (this is medical technical writing) the passive voice is used in preference to the active voice.

By the way, in this case, is the active voice "has shown" also right?

The sentence, "Losing 10 kilos has shown to decrease blood pressure by 5-20 pts.", is not right. It should be something like: "Research has shown that losing 10 kilos decreases blood pressure by 5-20 pts."
