Lose - split digraph

Can anybody please explain why we don't or ounce lose as 'low-se', in accordance with the split digraph?

The explanation is historical. At some point in history the current-day pronunciation began to be used, and we have stuck with it since then. There is no explanation that is logical if we consider only the forms we see and hear in today's English.
