Does one say 'lose pine needle'?

My Christmas tree is starting to lose its pine needles.

My Christmas tree is starting to lose its pine needles.

You don't need to say "pine" since you've already mentioned the tree, and it may not actually be a pine tree. My Christmas tree is usually a white fir, for example.

You could also say "drop" instead of lose.
