YankeeI'd understand 'smart' to mean 'stylish' in that sentence. I would not change 'gets dressed' to 'gets dressed up'. Your sentence says 'gets dressed for work' and that means 'put on clothes appropriate for work'. 'Get dressed up' doesn't necessarily suggest 'for work'.
