Looks okay?

Hello!
Could somebody please chech the grammar in these two sentences? I would truly appreciate that!

Our fatherland acquired its current appearance thousands of years ago when the air was so cold and damp that in nowadays we call this era an ice age. When the heavy blanket of snow disappeared, in some places the land raised above and where there used to be a sea, now land revealed.

Grammatically, it is good as corrected, but geologically, it is rather unsound. The air is not what is important, the glaciers that carved the land, and left behind moraines, dropstones, U-shaped valleys and other landforms are.
