Looking up for the word ( raised portion outside the doorway)

I just wonder how in English you call to the piece of raised land outside the doorway. I mean outside the doorway usually we see a raised land resembling a stair particularly seen in huts or bungalows kind of houses.

e.g. I was standing in the .............. knocking the door.
I forgot the key so just squatting down the ................. until when my husband arrived who got another key to unlock the door.

Please provide me with the word if you know. Thanks in advance.

Hi Gary, The platform just outside the doorway is commonly known as a 'stoop' in America. I do not know the British equivalent. It is something like a small 'porch', but may or may not be covered by a roof.

  • Another word that refers to this area is 'portico' but it means specifically an addition to the doorway that usually includes columns on either side and a classical style roof.

Hi guys,

I don't really have a single word to use for that.

I'd probably just say,

eg 'I was standing outside your front door.'

eg 'I was standing at the top of your steps.'

Best wishes, Clive

'Doorstep'

I stood at the front door, waiting on the doorstep.
