Looking for the right phrase

Hello,
I am looking for a phrase/word describing the legal power given to an attorney or agent to make decision on behalf of someone. I am not quite sure whether "power of attorney" would be the right phrase as it only describes the power that given to another individual because the person is incapacitated. I would be grateful if you could recommend alternatives which do not require such condition.

Regards
Hamid

Thank you Clive. How does the following sentence sound to you?

Ex. I have given my brother the power of attorney to be my proxy.

I'm not sure what form the authorization of a proxy must take, but 'power of attorney' sounds much, much wider-ranging to me.

So, your sentence does not
