Looking for an idiom...

Dear Users,

In my language we have an idiom that we use when we want to estimate the size of an object without having a precise measurement.

For example, let's say that I'm looking at a pair of shoes and I'm not sure what size they are. We use the word "eye" to say something like... "to my eyes they look like a 41" Is there an idiom like that in English?

Thanks

Hi I'd say it's not that different in UK English: - Maybe we should check the size but, to be honest, they look about right to me Dave

There is also an expression "by eye". For example, "By eye, I'd say it's about ten feet long".
