Looking for an Idiom

Hi, I'm looking for an idiom with the following meaning:

Sometimes you won't have a new beginning unless you give up.

In case that there isn't such a idiom in English, will you please polish this one?

An example of the use of this idiom:
A person who does not do well in a certain industry is trying very hard to improve the performance. But another person suggests him/her quit that industry and find a job in an industry that is more relevant to his/her experience. The person who makes the suggestion says:

Sometimes you won't have a new beginning unless you give up.

One that comes to my mind is a bit different, but the general idea is similar:

Thank you very much.

It is good, but I need something even closer. Maybe I am a bit greedy. Emotion: smile

Hi, Feebs. I think this was just a bumping up of his original thread, because he hadn't really had an acceptable answer.

Two idioms: cut your losses / start from scratch.

Though Harry had always wanted to be a chef, he had ended up as a grade school teacher. He tried his best but was not being promoted. A friend suggested that he should cut his losses and start from scratch in cooking school.
