I see some people play with their fingers or the phone wire while having telephone conversation. I'm so eager to see whether or not there exits a word or phrase for such situation in which the speaker plays with different objects unconsciously.

Iman, do you know the word "doodling"? If you happen to have a pen and a piece of paper in front of you you might doodle instead of fiddling with the phone cord. (It means to make meaningless drawings or marks on the paper without thinking about it -- while talking on the phone, for instance.)
