Looking for a word

Hi.
I am looking for a verb to best describes the action of being discouraged by encountring something that it far below your expectation.
As for the context I can say,
Ex. I had a date by Mary, but she backed off as she saw me, I think she thought I would be good looking.

Is back off the propper verb for the above context?
I would be gratefull if you could suggest some alternatives for it.
Thank you very much
Cheers

If you want to describe a person moving backwards, then "back off" is OK. Others you might consider are: "taken aback," disheartened, or disappointed.
