Looking for a word

Hi.

When we want to write in a piece of paper we need sth to put it under the paper so we can write, that can be a book, notebook or anything else.

Ex. Give me a piece of paper, a pen and that book so I can put the book under my paper and start writing. What do we call that book that is solely used for putting under our paper to create a firm surface for writing.

Ex. Give me a - - - - - - , I want to write a letter.

I hope I was able to convey what I intend.

Thanks

Your intention is very clear. I know of no particular word, but one of the following would convey your message: hard surface, support, (or something specific as you have already mentioned).

Hi,

I'd say 'something to lean on'.

Lean on? Is that Canadian? Emotion: smile

Hi,

No. I've said that all my life. I'm amazed that you don't. Live and learn!

What would you say instead?

Something inane, no doubt. I would be tongue-tied.

It's just that I think of leaning my whole body against a wall, shoulder touching the wall, when I think "lean on". It would never occur to me in the context of finding a firm surface on which to write.

BTW, what about the use of support that Mr. Philip mentioned?

Is it common to say: Hand me a piece of paper, a pen and a support to write on.

Thanks for your time and help
