Looking for a word

Hi.

I am looking for a word used for metal or woden rod used in barbecuing meat, chicken or fish.

when we want to barbecue meat, we can either put them on metal frame called grill or impale meat on some sticks or metal rods.

what are the metal rods called? and what is the verb for the action of impaling meat on the rods?

Yes, a skewer.

But you might like to look at the word 'spit'.
eg He put the chicken on a spit and cooked it.
