Looking for a verb

Hi.

What do we call shred of colorful papers that are thrown on the head of bride and bridegroom in some cultures?

These piece of papers are thrown to air in some occations.

I think there was a word for it in English, but I cannot remember what it was.

What does confetti mean in the following contexts. It seems there is another meaning for it.

Ex. I know that an election is coming, but as a conscientious Member I can not treat them as so much confetti.

Ex. My words have been grubby confetti, faded, tacky, blown far from the wedding feast.
