Looking for a proper verb

If I say "the man's been occupied by the demonic spirit" to indicate that the man's soul has been replaced by a devil, will it sound strange to you?
I mean "occupied" here sounds like the man's been held captive by the demon and not exactly having the soul switched with it.
Is there a better use of word right here?

I think "occupied" works as long as there's some prior context to set the stage for this sort of subject.

You know, at second thought,
I think if I change it as "the demonic spirit control the mind and soul of the person," it will thoroughly explain the situation even without any prior context.
But I do wanna find out that exact verb that perfect
