LOOKING-EGG

0 Hi friends,02br
00I would like to know the exact meaning of this "looking-egg" I have read on the Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley":02br
00 'Long ago at Easter I had a LOOKING-EGG. Peering in a little porthole at the end, I saw a lovely little farm, a kind of dream farm, (...) I regarded this as a fairy-tale farm gnomes sitting under toadstools.'02br
00 It seems that refers to a dream or a vision "I had", isn't?02br
00 Thanks in advance, Jo. 0-

0 In the last century, one form of Easter egg was a real egg (hen, duck, goose, whatever) from which the contents were removed. Then a small image or scene was inserted. You looked through the pinprick hole at one end and saw the scene.

I remember these from the late 1940s/early 50s. They were a hard sugar shell in the shape of an egg which were translucent and let light through on to a miniature scene inside. Fascinating when you are very small.

You probably will never see this message. Since it come 13 years after asked. I had a looking egg as a small child that I often think about. I was a super egg, about 6 inches long and about 3 inches round. It is my of two half’s and glued together with colored royal icing, with pretty sugar flowers. It had a little hole at the skinny end that you can peek into. Inside would be a little scene
