Look Vs. Look at

"No one wants to look me in the eye"

Hi, would it work if you include at in it?

"No one wants to look at me in the eye"

If not, why? And when is it necessary to avoid using the at following look?

Look me in the eye is a fixed phrase. It doesn't sound right if you add at to it. Look at... is fine in many other contexts, but not this one.
