Hi,
The other day, a physician was performing a check up and he said he would need to look up someone's nose and look down someone's throat. Since they both basically mean the same thing, my question is about the words he used. Why is it "up" for the nose and "down" for the throat? Are they interchangeable? Is it necessary to use look up and look down for other specific parts of the body?
I assume it has to do with the patient being upright, and from his perspective any intrusion to his nose will be upward and any to his throat, downward from his mouth. Can learning medicine be that easy?

The physician will look down into your oesophagus, up into your colon and urethra, and just into your ear.
