Look to the left and look left

Hi,

What is the difference between "look left" and "look to the left"?

Does look left mean you need to turn your head?

Does look to the left not necessarily involve turning your head?

Thank you very much.

To me, they are equivalent; but one is more of an absolute position, the other a relative position. Look left = 90 degrees from the straight-ahead position. (absolute) Look to the left = in the direction of left from where you are looking right now.
