look for a verb

I am looking for a word and a name. A branch taken from an apple tree is connected onto a pear tree. In a few years, a fruit that is neither an apple nor a pear will grow on the pear tree. What is the verb? What is the fruit called? transplant? hybrid? (My example may not be scientifically reasonable.)

There was a famous Soviet Union scientist who was specialized in the above technology and theroy. The initial sound of his name is "mi, or mi:" I'd like to know his name. Thanks a lot.

I believe the verb is 'graft'. The resulting fruit would by a hybrid or a cross.
