look at & read

Hi.

In my grammar book, there are short sentences "Right now I'm doing an exercise. I'm looking at my book.".

Doesn't it weird for not using "reading" but "looking at"?
The phrase "looking at" makes me feel like the person is not thinking but staring at his book.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you.
