You see a hat falling and want to say your friend standing next to you, which one would you say?
1. Look at the hat fall down

"Look at that hat ..." seems more likely in such a situation. Both "fall down" and "falling down" are correct English, but I'm struggling to imagine ever saying such a thing. I can imagine saying "Look! That hat's blown off that woman's head!"

OK, perhaps if the hat has a long way to fall, such that I can say this and the other person can react before it hits the ground, then I can imagine "Look at that hat falling down!". For example, you are standing on top of a cliff and the hat is fluttering down into the sea ...

Yes, exactly, Gyp. It's hard to imagine a situation when a hat falls for such a long period of time that you have time to notice and point it out to a companion while the fall remains in progress.
