The usual interpretation would be that she cared for her son; however, it could be carelessly written and mean, “She looked after her son (did).” It might also mean, “She looked (down the road) after her son.”
Yes. When our young children first walked to school, my wife would stand at the corner of our street and watch as the girls walked the four blocks to school. It reassured them (if they looked back) and possibly warned other kids not to annoy the girls on their way to class.
