Long vowel or short vowel

Doesn't the word "university" begins with a long vowel sound?
It is pronounced as youniversity. How come when I look up the websites, they all said its a consonant sound. The reason is ask this is because I have trouble placing my determiners. Thanks if you can answer my question.
