Long u sound or y sound?
Hi. I was told words like "university" have a long "u" sound. Then I also was told it has a "yoon" sound and therefore it isn't a vowel sound. I'm confused. Isn't a long "u" sound a vowel sound?
I also thought the word "cube" had a long "u" sound. Is there a difference between "university" and "cube" in terms of the sounds of the "u" they produce? I hope my questions make sense. Help.

0The so-called "Long U" sound consists of a semi-vowel (a glide) followed by the "Long OO" sound, as in "boot". Phonetically, it's written /ju:/.
For purposes of choosing "a" or "an" before a word that begins with "Long U", the semi-vowel /j/ is treated as a consonant (sounds like 'y' in 'youth'), so it's "a university".
And "cube" is /kju:b/.
