Long time

Here's one:

Joe enjoyed his vacation in the tropics, for it was only after a long time that he could relax under the sun.

Is this correct?

Top answer

Yes, but I would use 'was able to', because 'could' serves other more common purposes than the past of 'can'.

I am a little confused. I thought 'could' and 'can' were the same, both meaning 'able to'?

for? Did you mean but?

Joe enjoyed his vacation in the tropics, but he found that he couldn't relax under the sun right away.

Or maybe you meant this:

Joe enjoyed his vacation in the tropics
