To teach short vowels, pair up letters to following pictures: a picture of apple, e picture of egg, i picture of igloo, o picture of octopus, u picture of umbrella Practice saying sound then word, "a" as in apple, e as in egg, etc. That's one way kids with dyslexia learn to read...works pretty well for general population.
