Long and short vowels

Is there a easier way to distinguish whether words have long or short vowels(prononciation)?

1. They stood under the tree when it was raining.

2. The only person making a fool of themselves in these threads is your mate.

3. Could you please open the door for me?

4. The climate here suits me very well

5. Who'd call him in that situation?

Is there no way but to get it memorised?
