Long and shor 'o' sound

Hello,

Many kinds thanks in advance for a person who can help me to explain to one of my EFL students the difference between the short and long 'o' sound. Specifically, they want to know how to identify which one to use when pronouncing words that have the letter 'o' (e.g. Honda, oven, etc.).

Thank you.

I'm afraid that a dictionary will be required in most cases, though you can generally rely on the 'silent-E' (bore, stone, open) to define a long 'O' sound.
