Lonely Planet

Hi,

I have here a text for which I’ve formulated some questions and have given the answers. I’d like to know if:
a) I’ve used the right tenses
b) I’ve used the right question form and I've respected the topic
c) my questions and my answers sound OK to you
Please correct these kind of mistakes

**) Lonely Planet is one of the outstanding publishing successes of the past three decades. It emplys more than 500 people, and has offices in the USA, France, England and Australia, with its headquarters in Melbourne, Australia.
Has “Lonely Planet” been successful for the last three decades? Yes, LP has been an outstanding publishing success of the last three decades.

What time period has L.P been an outstanding succes? LP has been an outstanding success for the last three decades.
How many people does L.P. employ? LP employs more than 500 people.
Does LP employ more than 333 people? Yes, LP emplys more than 333 people.
Where has LP offices? LP has offices in the US, England, France and Australia.
Where are LP headquaters? LP’s Headquaters are locate in Melbourne, Australia.
Do LP have offices in the USA? Yes, LP has at least one office in the US.
Are LP headquaters located in France? No, they aren’t. (located in France)
Is LP a big company? Yes, for a publishing it is quite big. It has more than 500 emploeeys and offices in different countries.
Does LP belong to a multinational company? Yes, I think it may be called a multinational company because it has facilities in several countries and a centralized head office.

**) Tony and Maureen Wheeler have been writing Lonely Planet guide books for over thirty years. They have written more than 650 guides. They sell around 5.5 millions copies a year in 118 countries. The books have been translated into 17 languages.

Who have been writing LP guide books for over Thirty years? Tony and Maureen Wheeler.

Do M&T write the guides in 17 languages. No,I almost sure they don’t. I think the guides are translated from English to other languages.

**) Tony lived in many different countries when he was young because his father’s job took him all over the world. He studied engeeniring at Warwick University, than business studies at the London Business School.

Did T live in different countries when he was young? Yes, he did.
Why did Tony live in many different countries when ha was young? Because his father’s job…
What did Tony study? He studied engeeniring and than business.
Which university did he study engeeniring? Warwick University
Where is Warwick University? Warwick University is a public research university located in Coventry, UK.
Had he graduated his engeeniring studies when started to study business? Yes, he had.
(I’ve used “started business studies”. Is it correct? I think “was addmited …” would be a sensible alternative. Is it?)
What time interval elapsed between the momen he graduated Warwick University and started business studies at the London Business School? I don’t know. I suppose he started his business studies after he and Maureen opened up Lonely Planet business. (I think this question sounds somehow unnatural. If so, could you reformulate it? )

**) Maureen was born in Belfast. She went to London at the age of 20 because she wanted to see the world. Three days later she met Tony on a beach in Regent’s Park. In 1972 they travelled overland across Europe, through Asia, and on to Australia. The trip took six months. They wrote their first book, called Across Asia on the cheap on their kitchen table in Melbourne. They have lived in Melbourne on and off for over thirty years.

How old was Maureen when she went to London? She was 20.
Why did she go to London? She wanted to see the world.
When did she meet Tony? Three days after she went to London.

What is the name of their first book? It is called Across Asia.
Where were they when they wrote their first book? In Melborn, Oz.
Did they write the book on a desk? No, they wrote it on their kitcken table.
Do they live in Melbourne? Yes, they live in Melbourne. But they travel a lot for research, to study, or in business trips. So, we can say they have lived in Melbourne on and off for the last 30 years.

**) Together they have been to more than 100 countries. Tony says that the most amazing place he has ever visited is a remote hilltop city called Tsaparang, in Tibet.

How many countries have they been/ travelled through / seen / visited? More than 100.
What is the most amazing place Tony thinks he has ever visited? A remote hilltop city called Tsaparang.
Where is Tsaparang /the city of Tsaparang located? In Tibet.
Is it easy to reach Tsaparang. It’s not so easy as it is a remote Tibetan city.

**) He is thinking of selling his shares in the company. He said, “I’ve had a wonderful time, it’s been terrific, but it has now got too much like a business”.

Does Tony intend/want to sell his shares in the company? Yes, he does.
Why does Tony want to sell his shares in the company? He thinks travelling has lost the adventurous character to get more like a business.

I find very useful to take a sentence and ask questions so that the answers will be each word belonging to the text (sometime more questions for the same word). But not only that. Sometime I put myself to make suppositions and ask comprehention questions.

Hi grammarfreak,
*Of course “sometimes” which means “occasionally” and not “sometime” which means “at a not well defined moment”. The funny thing is I'd used “sometimes” and then changed it to “sometime”. .. and I can’t say why. But I’m sure this kind of inadvertence won’t happen again.

*I don’t know how to properly explain it … so I’ll give an example.

To be honest, this foramt of excerises may not be completely beneficial to your endeavor to improve the language. To me the " W" have more to do with logic and cognitive reasoning than grammar and sentence structure.
