Loneliness - solitude

Should we consider any context before to use these terms? For instance, sometimes people like to be alone in order to meditate about something, to work or recover from bad experiences, and in other situations people stay isolated, even if they don´t like at all this situation.

Thanks,

JANIS JOPLIN: All is loneliness
Every day when I walk home
I see loneliness
When I waited for my baby.
You know I open my front door,
I said mr. loneliness is waiting for me at home
Lordy, lord at home, lord at home, lo-o-o-rd at home.

BILLIE HOLIDAY singin´ Solitude
In my solitude
You haunt me
With dreadful ease
Of days gone by

solitude: [n] a disposition toward being alone [n] a solitary place [n] a state of social isolation loneliness: [n] a disposition toward being alone [n] sadness resulting from being forsaken or abandoned [n] the state of being alone in solitary isolation This is what I've found regarding both. I'd say "loneliness" is more personal.

I would say that loneliness always has a negative connotation, while solitude can be negative, neutral, or even positive. "After spending a week in New York, he really craved some solitude." Some people enjoy solitude and some don't, but no one enjoys loneliness.
