Vocabulary

loly-poly

OKIAGARIKOBOSHI (literally '([Buddhist] priest that [automatically] sits up])
This Japanese means a doll that sits straight up however we
set it on a level place.
Are there such dolls in English-speaking countries? If so, what do you call them?
1. loly-poly?
2. self-balancing doll?
The following site shows some of the dolls, but all the sentences are in Japansese
and should be garbled on your computer. http://www.city.aizuwakamatsu.fukushima.jp/j/kanko/city/minngei/yamada_m.html

Thank you.

I would call it a roly-poly doll (that's a long "o" sound, as in the verb "roll.") Roly-poly can also describe a short, plump, jolly person (like Santa Claus) and it is also a colloquial expression for a bug that rolls up into a ball when disturbed (www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/ invertebrates/isopod/Pill
