Canter and trot sound like similar speeds to me, but just different ways of moving the horse's legs.

the correct sequence is walk - tRot - canter - gallop.

According to Oxford Dictionary, canter is a pace of a horse or other quadruped between a trot and a gallop, with not less than one foot on the ground at any time.
