Would anybody ever omit the commas in the three sentences below?

(1) “I'm going” he said “to have tea.”

(2) "My foot hurts" said she.

(3) "My foot" said Susan "hurts quite a lot."

Thanks, guys.

I'll stick with the truly correct way, which is:

“I'm going”, he said, “to have tea.”

"My foot hurts", said she.

"My foot", said Susan, "hurts quite a lot."

Aspara Gus, you like these?

1. “I'm going”, he said, “to have tea.”

2. "My foot hurts", said she.

3. "My foot", said Susan, "hurts quite a lot."

That’s how I’d punctuate them.

Because you're not illogical.

Yeah, that's where the American punctuation system regarding quote marks is a tad off kilter. We don't have that aspect of punctuation correct at all.

But in this example, we are required to include the comma (after "impulsive") inside the quote because it calls for the comma in the original sentence and is technically a part of it, correct?

"I will concede that Marty was a bit impulsive," John said, "but I think he realized that he made the wrong decision."
