Logic of a sentence

The paintings come out fine, but I've always felt a little sorry for him, having to paint beautiful scenes in our backyard, which is not exactly picturesque. It never was much of a yard, but after I started raising chickens, things didn't exactly improve.

I'm not sure of the logic for the underlined part:

From the previous part it seems that the yard is not a good place for paining. Luckily it was not much of a yard (so it was OK before I raised chicken), but after I raised chickens, things got worse, (why the speaker says "things didn't exactly improve", Does the speaker raised chicken hoping to improve the condition of yard but in vain?)
