Locking/Closing of Threads, etc.

As an initial matter, why do you lock or preclude folks from posting/responding to threads - even those that may be years old? What's the point? Isn't some further discussion better than none?

Second, I find it supremely ironic when people give grammar advice and yet are too lazy and or too stupid to do basic things such as capitalize the first letter of a sentence or omit necessary apostrophes - esp. when discussing matters involving apostrophes, etc.
