Locked into a conversation

Hi

Have you ever been locked into a conversation with someone and it feels like the blood is draining right out of your body?

--- Does "locked into a conversation" mean something like "a hard talk with someone"?

Top answer

"Locked into a conversation" with someone means you are stuck in a conversation with someone but you don't want to be. In other words, you want to remove yourself from the conversation, but you can't and you have to keep talking with the other person. It is not necessarily the same as "a hard talk with someone" although it's possible you could be having a hard talk with someone and be at the same time locked into a conversation with that person.

Your boyfriend introduces you to his great-aunt Carol and then goes to talk to his cousins. Aunt Carol wants to talk about her feet, which hurt her. No one else is nearby to contribute to the conversation. You can't excuse yourself and leave Aunt Carol talking to the other person, because there is no other person. You are stuck there.

I'm not sure which experience drains the blood, but I don't believe that "locked into a conversation" necessarily means you're an unwilling participant. You may feel you can't get out of it simply because the topic is so engaging, or the points are so compelling.

Yes, we all have those seemingly endless one-way exchanges with Great Aunt Carole.
