Lock up (chess)

Hi
What's the difference between saying 'The center is locked up with pawns' and the center is closed with pawns' (or any other ways of expressing the idea I'm not aware of)?

We also call them such in Persian so they are quite familiar to me. We only call 'drama' 'draam'
